ASUU: FG set up committee to review no work no pay t

There are some signs that students in Nigeria would return to class after the federal government established a tactical committee to evaluate its "no work, no pay" policy against striking members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

This came after Adamu Adamu, the minister of education, met with vice-chancellors, chairmen of councils, and provosts of universities.

The meeting was part of efforts to end the seven-month strike by lecturers at public universities. It was held behind closed doors.

This was revealed to journalists by Ben Goong, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education, following the lengthy, over two-hour discussion.

He stated that the committee must consider concerns relating to increases in university professors' pay and develop practical solutions.

According to reports, the education minister would serve as the committee's chair.

The components of the committee include Professor Olu Obafemi, Professor Nimi Briggs, Udo Udoma, Bashir Dalhatu, Professor Kayode Adebowale,(University of Ibadan) Professor Kabir Bala (Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria), Professor Lilian Salami (University of Benin), Professor Charles Igwe (University of Nigeria Nsukka), Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Professor Ishaq Oloyede; Representatives of the Academy of letters, Science, Medicine, and social sciences.

Remember, that on February 14, 2022, ASUU announced a one-month warning strike that escalated into a full-blown industrial action

Some of the demands of the union included: funding for the revitalisation of public universities; payment of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA)/Earned Allowances (EA); payment of salary shortfalls; stopping the proliferation of state universities by governors; setting up of Visitation Panels.

Others are renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement; adoption of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) as a payment platform for university lecturers and payment of withheld salaries and non-remittance of check-off dues.
